    Former McKinsey India chief Adil Zainulbhai appointed as first chairman of QCI by PM

    On 17th September 2014, Former McKinsey India Chairman Adil Zainulbhai was appointed as Chairman of Quality Council of India (QCI) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will be having a tenure of three years at this post. 

    QCI is an autonomous body under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry and was formed in 1997. Apart from monitoring and administering the National Quality Campaign by propagating concepts of quality and best practices among suppliers of products and services, it also conducts awareness programmes, surveys, publications, media campaigns and specialised training courses etc.

    Now Goa will be a permanent host for IFFI

    On 17th September 2014, a MoU was signed between Information and Broadcasting Secretary Bimal Julka and Chief Secretary of Goa State B. Vijayan, as per it now onwards Goa will be hosting International Film Festival of India every year.

    This year will witness 45th International Film Festival of India, which will be held from 20 November to 30 November 2014 in Goa.

    FIBA allowed players to wear religious head coverings in Basketball games

    On 16th September 2014, The International Basketball Federation allowed players to wear religious head coverings, such as hijabs or turbans, though it is on trail basis. 

    They have set a two year testing phase that let players to wear head coverings. This rule will be re-evaluated in 2015 to decide whether to make it a permanent rule.

    Before this FIBA has allowed only 5cm head band. Even you may remember that in July 2014 during FIBA Asia Cup campaign in China, two sikh players of India namely Amjyot Singh and Amritpal Singh were asked to remove their turbans by saying that they were breaking FIBA rules. 

    Le Yucheng appointed as China's New Ambassador to India

    On 16th September 2014, Le Yucheng was appointed as China's new Ambassador to India by the Chinese President Xi Jinping. He will be succeeding Wei Wei as China's envoy to India. 

    NCW got new chairperson as Lalitha Kumaramangalam

    On 17th September 2014, BJP National Spokesperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam was appointed as chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCW). Union Minister of Women and Child Development appointed her at this position. She will be serving as Eighth Chairperson of NCW. 

    Lalitha Kumaramangalam has done graduation in economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi and also holds a degree of MBA from Madras University.

    NCW was set up as a statutory body in January 1992. It was set up under the National Commission for Women Act, 1990.

    Ex-Assam DGP Shankar Baruah found dead

    On 17th September 2014, Former Director General of Police of Assam, Sanker Baruah was found dead at his Uzan Bazar residence in Guwahati. It is believed that he shot himself with his .32 licensed-revolver causing his death. 

    It is important to mention here that his residence was raided by CBI during the course of investigation of multi-crore Saradha chit fund case on 28th August 2014.

    Sanker Baruah was a 1974-batch IPS officer who served as DGP from July 2009 to January 2012.

    First State to ratify NJAC Bill, 2014 - Rajasthan

    On 17th September 2014, We got the first Indian State to to ratify the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Bill 2014 and the name of the state is Rajasthan.

    This bill was passed unanimously in the Legislative Assembly of Rajasthan by voice note.

    This bill was recently passed by both Houses of Parliament which will end the two-decade-old collegium system of appointments and transfers of judges to higher judiciary.
