    Which Indian-origin lawyer to chair UN commission on human rights in South Sudan - Yasmin Sooka

    On 24 June 2016, the South African Indian-origin lawyer and long-time human rights activist whose name is Yasmin Sooka was appointed to chair a UN commission.

    The commission is all set to monitor the human rights situation in South Sudan and make recommendations for their improvement also.

    Role of Yasmin Sooka -

    • Yasmin Sooka will be seen serving together with Kenneth Scott from the US and Godfrey Musila of Kenya on the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan.

    • However, The UN resolved to establish the Commission following calls for investigation into alleged atrocities by both the government and rebel forces before an independent South Sudan was carved out of the larger Sudan in 2011.

    Which country bans citizens from working in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya – Nepal

    Among Important International Current Affairs, on 24 June 2016 Nepal is the country who banned its citizens from working in strife-torn Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya. 

    This decision was made at a cabinet meet after 13 Nepali security guards were killed in a Taliban suicide bombing in Kabul.

    In Afghanistan, Nepali nationals who were employed as security guards in the Canadian embassy were killed in Kabul. On 20 June 2016, they were killed when militants exploded a bomb in a minibus.

    Which country's Parliament passes Right to Information bill with amendments - Sri Lanka

    On 24 June 2016, Sri Lankan Parliament finally passed the Right to Information (RTI) bill with amendments.

    The bill that looks for to restore transparency and good governance in the country was adopted without a vote in the Parliament after two days of debate.

    Main Aim of the Bill – 

    • Bill has been passed to provide for the Right of Access to Information, to specify grounds on which access may be denied, to establish the Right to Information commission, to appoint Information Officers and to set out the procedure and for matters connected with it.
