Researchers discover Ichthyosaur fossil in  - India

A team of researchers including researchers from India and Germany have discovered a 152 million-year-old remain of an ichthyosaur - an extinct seawater reptile in the Kutch area of Gujarat.
The fossil was discovered in the chest of rocks from the Mesozoic Era, which ran between 252- 66 million years ago. The researchs have been published in the science journal.
    Key Highlights

    • The scientists believe that the sample belongs to Ophthalmosauridae member of ichthyosaurs that found in oceans between 165 and 90 million years ago.
    • This is the first ichthyosaur fossil that has been found in India.
    • The detailed study of the fossil’s teeth explained that it was a top-tier carnivorous predator in the ecosystem.
    • The 5.5 m long sample was incomplete, with skull and tail bones were found to be missing.
    • As per Prof Guntupalli VR Prasad, the discovery is remarkable discovery it is the first Jurassic ichthyosaur record from India and also due to the reason it throws light on the evolution and variety of ichthyosaurs in the Indo-Madagascan region and India's biological connection with other areas in the Jurassic.
      Ichthyosaurs
    • The species are huge seawater reptiles, belonging to the class Ichthyosauria or Ichthyopterygia.

    • They were particularly plentiful in the later Triassic and early Jurassic time, until they were substituted as the top aquatic predators by other seawater reptilian group, the Plesiosauria, in the older Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
    • The species became extinct for unknown reasons during 90 million years ago.
    • The existence and complete skelton of the species was first ever known to the world in the early 19th century in England.
    • In 1834, the Ichthyosauria was classified and in the late 19th century, many well-preserved, including soft-tissue remains of ichthyosaur were found in Germany.
      Main features of the species
