    National Organic Farming Research Institute will be set up by Union Government in - Sikkim

    Among the important national Current Affairs, On 5th February 2016, The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare decided to set up the National Organic Farming Research Institute in Sikkim.

    This decision was taken by Sikkim Agriculture Minister Som Nath Paudyal and Union Agriculture Minister Radhamohan Singh.

    The existing Regional Centre of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in Gangtok will be upgraded for the establishment of Institute.

    Where did the 12th South Asian Games inaugurated - Guwahati

    Among the important national Current Affairs, On 5th February 2016, the 12th South Asian Games 2016 open at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium in Guwahati, Assam was declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    All 8-participating nations marched past a crowd of thousands who cheered for them with applause while Squash Player Gaurav Ghoshal was the flag bearer of the 521-member Indian contingent.

    12th South Asian Games open

    • Athletes from India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Afghanistan will be part of the games.
    • ‘Play for Peace, Progress and Prosperity’ is the slogan of the game.
    • The mascot of the event is "Tikhor", a one-horned rhino that represents endangered fauna of Assam found in Kaziranga National Park.

    Name the NASA Astronaut who has passed away - Edgar Mitchell 

    On 4th February 2016, the sixth man to walk on the Moon, NASA Astronaut Edgar Mitchell passed away in Florida at the age of 85. He was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 14. 

    It was the 45th anniversary of his lunar landing, which took place on 5th February 1971.

    On 5th February 1971, Apollo 14 mission was launched with the crew including Mitchell, Alan Shepard and Stuart Roosa.

    In the year 1972, Mitchell left the US space agency NASA and set up the Institute of Noetic Sciences, which aimed to support individual and collective transformation through consciousness research.
