    Indian racer Jehan Daruvala won - New Zealand Grand Prix 2017

    Jehan created history by becoming first and only Indian racer to win New Zealand Grand Prix 2017 in motor sport at the Chris Amon Circuit.

    Important Points -

    • Jehan earned pole position in the Race 1 of the Toyota Racing Series and in the New Zealand GP.

    • Jehan raced for 3 km circuit to achieve the pole position in Race1 and he was just 7/100th of a second ahead of former Brazilian World F1 Champion's son, Pedro Piquet.

    • This race was the longest of the season as it was comprised of 35 laps.

    Indian tabla player Sandeep Das won - 2017 Grammy Award for Best Music globally

    Indian Table player Sandeep Das has won the Grammy award for Best Global Music 2017 on 13th February 2017. 

    Interesting Highlights :

    • He bagged the award for Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble ‘Sing Me Home’. It features tunes composed by different artists at global level.

    • This music was a part of the documentary named “Music of the strangers:Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble”.

    • Das started playing at the age of 16 from his guru Kishan Maharaj in Banaras.

    Where International Aero India 2017 begun - Bengaluru

    The International Aero India2017 starts at Air Force Station, Yelahanka in Bengaluru on 14th February 2017.The 5-day show will go on till 18 February 2017.

    Do You Know :

    • It is the 11th edition as Asia’s premier air show.

    • This was started in 1996, is jointly organized by the Union Ministry of Defense, Indian Air Force, DRDO, Department of Space and the Union Civil Aviation Ministry.

    • In the previous edition in 2015, 644 companies from 33 countries took part.

    Who has been appointed as Pakistan's First Woman Foreign Secretary to UN - Tehmina Janua

    Tehmina Janua has been appointed as a Pakistan's first Woman Foreign Secretary to UN on 13th February 2017.

    Some Interesting Key Facts -

    • She had served as ambassador to Italy.

    • In 2016, Janjua led Pakistan's diplomatic efforts to get the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights to visit Kashmir after the death of more than 90 civilians in clashes with Indian security forces.

    • Janjua is serving as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva at present. 

    Supreme Court convicted Sasikala for - Disproportionate assets case

    Supreme court convicted Sasikala for the disproportionate assets on 14th February 2017.

    Things to Know -

    • Supreme Court has delivered this judgment on the grounds of appeal filed by Karnataka Govt.

    • In June 2015, The Karnataka High Court overruled the trial court’s verdict.

    • Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and three co-accused, including Sasikala, were acquitted by The High Court in the disproportionate assets case.

    RDEL and US Navy signed – Master Ship Repair Agreement

    Reliance Defense and Engineering Ltd (RDEL) and the US Navy signed a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) on 13th February 2017. 

    Interesting Highlights -

    • It will be undertaking service, maintenance and repair of the Seventh Fleet of the US Navy that is operational in the Indian Ocean.

    • This logistics agreement targets to enable forces of the two nations to use each other’s bases for replenishments of supplies and repairs.

    •The US Navy spends nearly Rs 3000 crore for maintenance and repair services for the seventh fleet.

    India's first floating elementary school inaugurated - on Manipur's Loktak Lake

    India's first floating elementary school is inaugurated on Manipur’s Loktak Lake on 13th February 2017.

    Vital Information

    • Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in northeast India, also referred as a lifeline of Manipur.

    • It is a great source of water for irrigation, drinking water and hydropower generation for the local people. 

    • The school was established to control the sudden high dropout rate of childrenwho were rendered homeless due to the recent evacuation of phumdis and living in the Champu Khangpok floating villages.
