    International Day of Rural Women 2017 observed globally on - 15th October 2017

    The International Day of Rural Women was celebrated across the world on 15th October 2017 with the theme 'Challenges and opportunities in climate-resilient agriculture for gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls'.

    The Day recognizes the critical role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women, to enhance agricultural and rural development, improving food security and removing rural poverty.

    The United Nations General Assembly established this day through its resolution 62/136 dated 18th December 2007. It was first celebrated on 15th October 2008.

     Bureau of Indian standards  Act 2016 enforced from - 12th October 2017

    A new Bureau of Indian standard Act 2016 has been brought into force with an effect from 12th October, 2017. It was notified on 22nd March, 2016. The Act sets up the Bureau of Indian Standards as the National Standards Body of India.

    The main Highlights

    • The Act enables the government to take under compulsory certification regime any goods or article of any scheduled industry, system, process or service which it considers essential in the public interest or for the safety of human, safety of the environment, animal or plant health, or unfair trade practices prevention, or national security.
    • It will be making hallmarking of the precious metal articles mandatory.
    • It also enables Central Government to appoint any authority or agency, other than just BIS, to validate the services conformity and products to a standard and provide certificate of conformity.
    • The provision of this act also makes way to recall or repair even if conforming to the relevant Indian Standard. It includes the product with the bearing of Standard Mark.
