    Which day is observed on 23rd March 2015 - World Meteorological Day 2015

    Among the important International Current Affairs, On 23rd March 2015, The World Meteorological Day (WMD) 2015 was observed across the world. Climate Knowledge for Climate Action was the theme for WMD 2015. The theme accept significance in the backdrop of necessity to disseminate Climate Change related knowledge to take up appropriate mitigation and adaptation actions.

    Every year on the occasion of World Meteorological Day, awards for meteorological research are presented. These awards comprise of The Norbert Gerbier-Mumm International Award, Professor Dr. Vilho Vaisaila Award and The International Meteorological Organization Prize. 23rd March is observed as World Meteorological Day to commemorate the entry into force of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Convention in 1950 aimed at creating the organisation.

    Who won the women doubles title of BNP Paribas Tennis Open - Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis

    Among the important Sports Current Affairs, On 21st March 2015, the women doubles title of BNP Paribas Open was won by Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis, the Indo-Swiss women pair of Tennis. In the title match played at Indian Wells, USA, the duo beated the Russian pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

    En route to the title, the top seeds Sania and Hingis didn’t drop even a single set in the tournament. Till date, Hingis has won 11 Grand Slams which include two in mixed and nine in women's, while Sania has won 3 Grand Slams, all in mixed.

    World Number 3 Simona Halep of Romania won the women singles title of the BNP Paribas Open. She defeated Serena Williams of the US.

    SEBI (International Financial Services Centres) Guidelines, 2015 approved by - SEBI

    Among the important National Current Affairs, On 22nd March 2015, SEBI (International Financial Services Centres) Guidelines, 2015 was approved by the capital market regulator, Security and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Board.

    The guidelines for IFSCs aim to provide an enabling environment for setting up of capital market infrastructure like depository services, stock exchanges, clearing houses, etc., in such centres.

    The guidelines were proposed in pursuant to the announcement made by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley during his budget speech. He had announced to establish the first IFSC, Gujarat International Finance Tec-city (GIFT), in Ahmadabad.

    Instructions for International Financial Services Centres (IFSC)

    • Subsidiaries in IFSC can be set up by any Indian stock exchange by the SEBI or a foreign stock exchange recognized by the originating country’s market regulator.
    • A stock exchange can be set up with 25 crore rupees capital, against the normal necessity of 100 crore rupees. Although, this will have to be raised to 100 crore rupees within 3 years. Such exchanges will also be given three years to complete de-mutualisation.
    • Clearing Corporation can be set up, with 50 crore rupees capital, against the norm of 300 crore rupees, which will have to be achieved within three years of establishment.
    • Issue of depository receipts and securities by foreign issuers under the Foreign Currency Depository Receipts Scheme, 2014, will also be allowed.
    • IFSC will be set up beneath the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Act of 2005.
    • Foreign investors, institutional investors, Non-resident Indians and resident Indians eligible under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) are allowed to participate in IFSC.

    Who became the first Field Marshal of Sri Lanka - Former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka

    Among the important International Current Affairs, On 22nd March 2015, Sarath Fonseka, the former Army Chief of Sri Lanka, was conferred with the country's highest military rank of Field Marshal. President Maithripala Sirisena awarded the honorary title for achieving victory over terrorism.

    He became the first Sri Lankan Army officer to become Field Marshal. He is a former Chief of Defence Staff and is now a member of Sri Lanka Parliament from Colombo district. In his leadership, the 26-year Sri Lankan Civil War came to an end in 2009 in which the rebels Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were defeated by Sri Lankan army.

    Among the important National Current Affairs, On 23rd March 2015, The Union Government announced that Shashi Kapoor was selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2014. He is 77-year-old, veteran film actor and producer and the winner of 46th Dada Saheb Phalke Award. The 2014 Dadasaheb Phalke award to Shashi Kapoor made him the third member of Kapoor family to receive the award after Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor.

    On 23rd March 2015, The President of India Pranab Mukherjee awarded Certificate of Honour to eminent scholars of Persian, Pali/Prakrit, Arabic and Sanskrit. The Maharishi Badrayan Vyas Samman was also conferred to young scholars for the year 2014 by him.
