    Government notified ethanol-making directly from - Sugarcane juice, B-molasses

    As per amendment in Sugarcane Control Order 1966, Now Union Food Ministry has notified decision which allows sugar mills to manufacture ethanol directly from sugarcane juice or an intermediate product called B-molasses. So during surplus years now mills can divert cane juice for ethanol manufacturing.
    As during 2017-18, sugar mills have record output of 32 million tonnes which is record high. Prices of sugar have fallen below production cost, so now by producing ethanol directly from sugarcane juice or B-molasses will help sugar mills.

    Name of Committee which submitted report on Personal Data Protection Bill, 2018 - Justice Srikrishna Committee

    On 27th July 2018, Justice BN Srikrishna Committee submitted its report on the data protection law. Committee submitted its report to Union Minister for Electronics and IT, law and justice, Ravi Shankar Prasad.

    Following are the main points of this report :

    • Committee proposed that critical personal data of Indian citizens shall be processed in centres located within the country.
    • Processing senstitive personal data should be on the basis of "explicit consent".
    • For data processing outside India, the law will apply to those carrying on business in India or other activities such as data profiling which could cause privacy harms to data principals in India.
    • It also recommended setting up of a Data Protection Authority (DPA) to prevent misuse of personal information and also provides for setting up an Appellate Tribunal.
    • For Children Data Protection it recommended that compaines should be barred from certain types of data processing such as behavioural monitoring, tracking and any other type of processing which is not in the best interest of the child.
