    S. Tendulkar became first Indian cricketer to be on cover of Wisden Cricketer's Almanack

    The 151st edition of the Wisden Cricketer's Almanack published on 9th April 2014 carries a picture of Sachin Tendulkar on its cover page. With this Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian cricketer, who retired from International cricket in November 2013 and ended his glorious 24-year long career, became the 1st Indian cricketer to be featured on the cover page of the Almanack. 

    Ratan Tata appointed member of China-backed Board of Boao Forum for Asia

    Ratan Tata on 10 April 2014 was appointed as a member of the Board of Boao Forum for Asia (BFA). The post is a rare distinction for an Indian in the Chinese government-backed influential body.

    Ratan Tata is one of the 15 members of the Board of Boao Forum for Asia. The appointment of Ratan Tata to the board of the BFA is seen as part of China's efforts to push closer ties with India. 

    Important to note :

    The founding of the BFA was driven by the People's Republic of China and founded by 26 Asian and Australasian states on 27 February 2001. The organisation held its first meeting on 12 April 2002. 

    Shompens tribe of A & N islands casted votes for the first time for Lok Sabha

    Shompens tribe of Andaman & Nicobar islands for the first time casted their votes in Great Nicobar on 10 April 2014. Shompens - one of the stone-age tribes - casted the votes for the Lok Sabha constituency of Bay Islands for Lok Sabaha election 2014. Shompens are one of the six tribes that inhabit the forest in the southern-most tip of the country. They are classified as primitive tribal group along with the four other tribes Jarawa, Andamanese, Onge and the Sentinelese.

    The Shompens have very limited contact with outsiders and live in about 12 habitations made of bamboo and leaf thatch.

    Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan named among Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year

    On 9th April 2014, Shikhar Dhawan was named among the Wisden's five Cricketers of the Year for his performance in 2013.

    Apart from Shikhar Dhawan four other were following :  

    1. Chris Rogers of Australia,
    2. Ryan Harris of Australia
    3. Joe Root of England 
    4. Charlotte Edwards of England 

     

    A new internet security threat "Heartbleed"

    A new online security threat which can impact online safety of internet users has been identified and is named as "Heartbleed". This threat can result into compromising of confidential information. This is primarily a concern on OpenSSL which is used by many websites. This is a result of programming error. 

    OpenSSL software is created by a German Software developer Robin Seggelmann.

    This bug was un-noticed since two years that is a matter of much worry for security experts. This error makes it possible to snoop on Internet traffic even if the padlock is closed, so Secured keys which are used for deciphering the confidential data can be accessed without the knowledge of owners.

    New fix of OpenSSL has been released but now the individual website administrators are required to use this version and make required changes and on individual level you should change your online passwords if you are not sure which site is using OpenSSL. Have a safe internet Surfing.

    Vodafone India bought 11 percent stake of Piramal in for 8900 crore rupees

    Piramal Enterprises announced on 10th April 2014 to sold its equity stake to Vodafone India for 8900 crore rupees. The deal values Vodafone India at Rs 1960 per share.

    After the government allowed foreign companies to own up to 100 percent of Indian telecommunication carriers, Vodafone had announced plans in October 2013 to take full control of the India unit by buying out minority partners for a total of Rs 10,141 crore. The British group, which entered India in 2007 by buying Hutchison Whampoa's local unit in a $11 billion deal, had previously purchased a 4.5 percent stake held by Vodafone India non-executive chairman Analjit Singh.

    Millennium Technology Prize 2014 bagged by Stuart Parkin

    On 9th April 2014, British-American physicist Stuart Parkin won Millennium Technology Prize 2014. He won this prestigious award for his discoveries leading to a thousand-fold increase in digital data storage on magnetic disks. This Prize is worth of 1 million euro and it was announced by the Technology Academy Finland in Finland. 

    His discoveries facilitated the cloud services and online distribution of social networks, music and film.

    Important to note : 

    The Millennium Technology Prize was initiated in 2004 by the Technology Academy Finland. It is biennial award (given once in two years) given for technological innovations that significantly improve the quality of people's lives.
