    Justice B S Chauhan appointed as the Chairman of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT)

    On 14th May 2014, Justice BS Chauhan, the Judge of the Supreme Court of India was appointed as the Chairman of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT). Justice Chauhan will succeed Justice NP Singh. 

    Justice Chauhan, who is due to retire on 1 July 2014, was appointed as the Chairman of the Tribunal on the recommendation of the former Chief Justice of India, Justice P Sathasivam.

    Indian delegation at 67th Cannes International Film Festival led by Kamal Haasan

    Actor filmmaker Kamal Haasan led the Indian delegation at the 67th Cannes International Film Festival inaugurated in Cannes, France on 14 May 2014. The Festival will be held from 14 to 25 May 2014.

    Kamal Haasan is chairman of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) Media and Entertainment Committee-South.

    Kamal Haasan inaugurated the Indian Pavilion. The India Pavilion will showcase Indian cinema across linguistic, cultural and regional diversity. 

    World Migratory Bird Day observed across the world

    On 10th - 11th May 2014, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) was observed across the world. The Theme of the WMBD 2014 was Destination Flyways: Migratory Birds and Tourism.

    The day was celebrated by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to promote their new Destination Flyways Project. The project aims to build local sustainable tourism by linking together key migratory bird sites, local communities and the global wildlife watching industry.

    Lakhdar Brahimi, United Nations envoy to Syria announced his resignation

    Among the International Current Affairs, On 13th May 2014, UN Envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi submitted his resignation to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York. He will relinquish the office on 31th May 2014.

    Lakhdar Brahimi was also the League of Arab States Special Representative on the Syrian crisis.

    Lakhdar Brahimi was appointed as the peace-facilitator in Syria on 17th August 2012 to replace the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
