    Mudgal panel directed to probe IPL spot fixing scandal by Supreme Court

    On 16th May 2014, The Supreme Court of India appointed three-member panel headed by Justice (retd) Mukul Mudgal to further probe the IPL spot fixing scandal involving Narayanswamy Srinivasan and 12 others. Other two members of the probing panel are additional Solicitor General L Nageshwar Rao and advocate Niloy Dutta.

    The Supreme Court bench comprising of Justice AK Patnaik (head of the bench) and Justice Ibrahim Kalifulla asked the panel to submit its report by the end of August 2014 and has posted the matter for further hearing to September 2014. 

    The apex court also said that maintenance of confidentiality of the further probe is needed to be maintained by the Mudgal Committee. In its direction, the court also claimed that the allegations would be known to other people if a fresh panel comprised of new members is allowed to conduct the probe.

    Amul to set up five lakh litres per day capacity dairy plant in Varanasi

    On 14th May 2014, Asia's biggest milk brand Amul announced to set up a dairy processing plant in Varanasi. The plant will initially process five lakh litres per day with the capacity to double the production.

    Palanpur based Banas Dairy will set up the plant with the investment of 200 crore rupees. Banas Dairy is a member of the union of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation that markets Amul.

    Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav offered Amul 30 acres land in Varanasi. Besides Varanasi, Banas Dairy also acquired 40 acres land in Kanpur and another 20 acres land in Lucknow to set up dairy processing plants, each with Rs 200 crore investments.

    PM Manmohan Singh submitted his resignation to President

    On 17th May 2014, Prime Minister of India Shri Manmohan Singh submitted his resignation to the President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee. Manmohan Singh is the third longest serving Prime Minister of India after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. His resignation was accepted by the President.

    After accepting his resignation, the President has asked Singh to continue as the caretaker Prime Minister till the new government takes charge of the office. 

    Shri Manmohan Singh has served India as the Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2009 and from 2009 to 2014.

    Now Shri Narendra Modi who is Prime Minister Candidate of BJP will become next Prime Minister of India.

    Krishnan Nair, Founder of Leela Group Hotels passed away

    On 17th May 2014, Capitan Krishnan Nair, founder of Leela Group of Hotels passed away in Mumbai at the age of 91. He received the Padma Bhushan award in 2010.

    He was born in Kannur district of Kerala in 1922. He joined the freedom movement at the age of 13 and joined Indian Army in Bangalore. Later he joined as wireless officer in Abbottabad and he rose to the rank of a captain in the Maratha Light Infantry.

    Capitan Krishnan Nair founded the Leela Hotel in Mumbai in 1987. He expanded the Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts in a span of 25 years to eight luxury properties in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Gurgaon, Udaipur, Goa, Chennai and Kovalam.

    Nitish Kumar resigned as Bihar Chief Minister

    After the poor performance of ruling party JD(U) of Bihar, Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has submitted his resignation to Governor D Y Patil. Important to mention here that JD(U) was able to get only 2 seats out of 40 seats in Bihar.
