    Indian-American student Akhil Rekulapelli wins National Geographic Bee

     On 21st May 2014, Indian-American student Akhil Rekulapelli won the National Geographic Bee championship in Washington, USA, which includes a $50,000 college scholarship. Ameya Mujumdar from Florida stood second, while California's Tuvya Bergson-Michelson finished third. Ameya Mujumdar is also an Indian American student.

    Akhil Rekulapelli also received a trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic's Lindblad Expeditions.

    Final questions was: "Oyala, a planned city located in the rainforest 65 miles east of Bata, is being built as a capital for which African country?"

    Rekulapeklli answered : "Equatorial Guinea".

    Eighth grade student Akhil Rekulapelli belongs to Virginia. He started with a School Bee competition in Ashburn and advanced to the national championship after excelling in both regional and state geography bees.

    Floating hotel AB Celestial unveiled in Mumbai

     On 22nd May 2014,  India's first floating hotel AB Celestial unveiled in Mumbai. It will be docked at Bandra under the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

    Credit of construction of this hotel goes to Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) in partnership with WB International Consultants and AB Hospitality.

    Hotel AB Celestial has overall capacity of 660 guests. It has 3-tier luxury dinning facility with a sky deck, two galleys. It will have two multi-cuisine restaurants, including a club lounge, equipped with a 24 hour coffee shop.

    It will provide a 360-degree view of the city of Mumbai and the Sea Link. It is expected to be open for public by August 2014.

    The MTDC has a 10 per cent profit share arrangement, and will promote this project. 

    21st May observed as Anti-Terrorism Day across the country

    21st May 2014 was observed as Anti-Terrorism Day throughout the country. It was on this day in 1991, that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a team of Sri Lankan Tamil terrorists.

    The day is observed to generate awareness in the country among all sections of people, about the danger of terrorism and violence and its effect on the people, society and the country as a whole. Every Year Union Home Ministry administers the Anti-Terror pledge to Government employees.

    Wildlife wing resumes Olive Ridley conservation in Tamil Nadu after 25 years

    On 23rd May 2014, after 25 years Olive Ridley Conservation Programme was resumed in Tamil Nadu by Wildlife wing of the Forest Department. Department has set up a hatchery at Besant Nagar. Further, the department has built a concrete tomb near the hatchery to create awareness of Olive Ridley turtle conservation. As per the data of the department, this season had witnessed more than 700 Olive Ridley deaths along the coast between Chennai and Marakkanam.
