Which Court allowed Passive Euthanasia and Living Will - Supreme Court

Among Important Judgements, On 9th March 2017, Supreme Court ruled that the passive euthanasia and advance 'living will' are permissible. This ruling came from a five-judge Constitution Bench ( Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justices AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan ).

Important to mention here that it also has strict guidelines with it too. Living will is a written document that allows a patient to give explicit instructions in advance about the medical treatment to be administered when he or she is terminally ill. Medical board with be invloved to determine whether the patient in a vegetative state could be revived or not.

This ruling came on a PIL filed in 2005 by a NGO named Common Cause.

Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Bill, 2018 approved by - Union Cabinet

On 7th March 2018, Introduction of Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Bill, 2018 was approved by Union Cabinet. This bill is aimed to encourage institutional arbitration for settlement of disputes and make India a centre of robust Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism.

Name of the leader who was stripped of Elie Wiesel Award - Aung San Suu Kyi ( Myanmar )

On 7th March 2018, Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanamar was stripped off her human rights award ( Elie Wiesel Award ) conferred by US Holocaust Memorial Museum.
This was done due to violence against Rohingya Muslim minority community in the Rakhine state of Myanmar.

About Elie Wiesel Award

• The award is named after late Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel who, like Suu Kyi, is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

• The museum gives away the ‘Elie Wiesel’ award to internationally prominent individuals whose actions have advanced the Museum’s vision of a world where people confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity.

Which state passed bill to award death penalty for rape of girls below 12 years of age - Rajasthan

On 9th March 2018, Rajasthan Assembly passed The Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Bill, 2018. As per this law death penalty will be awarded to the convicts involved in the rape of girls below 12 years of age.

Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria introduced this bill in Assembly which was later passed with a voice vote. This law adds sections 376-AA and 376-DD to the Indian Penal Code, 1860.

Important to mention here that Madhya Pradesh has already a rule to award death penalty to child rapists, so Rajasthan became second state to do so.
