Who wins India’s first Gold medal at 2016 Rio Paralympic Games - Mariyappan Thangavelu

Among Important Sports Current Affairs, at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, Mariyappan Thangavelu has won India’s first gold medal. 

He won this gold medal in the Men’s High Jump T-42 event with jump of 1.89 metres. 

After this win, Thangavelu now became the first Indian high-jumper to win gold at the Paralympics. 

However, this was India’s overall third gold at the Paralympics and the first after 12 years. 

Also in the same event, India’s Varun Singh Bhati won the bronze medal with the jump of 1.86 metres to finish third and Sam Grewe of United States won the silver medal. 

Indian Coast Guard commissions offshore patrolling vessel – Sarathi

Among Important National Current Affairs, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has finally commissioned well-equipped offshore patrolling (OPV) vessel named ‘Sarathi’. 

However, it was commissioned by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar at Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) shipyard at Vasco in south Goa. 

Do You Know – 

• ICGS Sarathi is the third in the series of six OPVs built by GSL for Indian Coast Guard (ICG). 

• Also, it is designed and built indigenously by GSL. It is the largest i.e. 105-meter long and is most advanced new generation off-shore patrol vessel. 

RBI cancelled certificate of registration of five – NBFCs

On 8th September 2016, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the certificate of registration of five non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).

However, now these companies will not be able to transact the business of a non-banking financial institution as laid down under clause (a) of Section 45-I of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

Here are the list of the NBFCs whose certificate of registration were cancelled - 

• M/s Simco Consultants Private Limited

• M/s Lunkad Securities Ltd

• M/s Rajvir Marketing and Investment Private Limited

• M/s Crystal Investments Limited   

• M/s Shri Jaya Investments Agency Limited (formerly known as Arcot Finance & Agency Limited)   

Mandi, Sindhudurg emerge cleanest Districts in India - Gramin Swachh Survekshan

According to Gramin Swachh Survekshan Mandi in Himachal Pradesh and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra have emerged the cleanest districts in India. 

However, Sindhudurg was judged as the cleanest in the ‘Plains’ category and Mandi in the cleanest district in ‘Hills’ category. 

The Gramin Swachh Survekshan report was finally released by the Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj.

Which state bagged Best Horticulture State award – Haryana

On 9th September, Haryana has bagged ‘Best Horticulture State’ award for the concerted efforts made by the state government to increase the income of the farmers in horticulture.

However, this award was received by Haryana Agriculture Minister OP Dhankar at two-day 9th Agricultural Leadership Summit 2016. 

Also, the summit was organized by Indian Council of Food and Agriculture (ICFA) in New Delhi.

Civil Aviation Ministry prohibits use of which phone on board aircraft - Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7

On 9th September 2016, Civil Aviation Ministry prohibited the use and carriage of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 smart phone on board aircraft. 

However, this decision was taken in light of several incidents globally, involving the battery of Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

Also the Ministry has issued a public notice advising airlines and travellers not to turn on or charge the smart phones during flights. 

Here, passengers have also been advised not to stow them in their checked in baggage. As per notification, passengers can carry them in their hand baggage in switched-off mode.
