    Sole Indian in Forbes list of highest paid athletes - Virat Kohli

    Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli is the only Indian sportsperson to feature in the 2017 Forbes list of ‘The World’s highest paid athletes’. Kohli has been ranked 89th among the 100 top-earning athletes with a total pay of $22 million that includes $3 million from salary and winnings and rest $19 million from endorsements. It also added that Kohli is batting records and in 2015 he was named as the captain of the Indian national team, making him one of the youngest players to ever hold this job.

    • Christiano Ronaldo is right at the top of the list with a total pay of 93 million dollars.
    • American basketball player LeBron James comes in at the 2nd spot with $86.2 million.

    • Roger Federer, tennis star is at 4th spot with 64 million.
    • American basketball player Kevin Durant is at the 5th with 60 million.

    New anti-dumping duties on steel products from China imposed by - Europe

    To broaden its campaign to protect struggling steel manufacturers in Europe, the European Union (EU) imposed new anti-dumping duties on steel products from China, one of the world’s largest steel makers in June 2017. EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem said in Brussels that it imposed duties of up to 35.9 percent on Chinese hot-rolled flat steel used in gas containers, pressure vessels,shipbuilding and tubes and energy pipelines.

    Key Points

    • According to the European Commission (EC), Chinese producers benefit from preferential lending, tax rebates and other financial help that allow exports to the EU at artificially-low prices.
    • The Commission had imposed anti-dumping duties on pipe butt-welding fittings and stainless steel tube which are used to join steel pipes and tubes in January 2017.
    • It also said that the bloc’s action stemmed due to a misunderstanding of China’s financial loan system and trade trends. 

    Formation of committee to look into farmers demands on - 10th June 2017

    Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the formation of a six-member high powered committee on 10th June 2017. The committee will be looking into demands of the farmers including a loan waiver.

    The panel will be submitting the report to the state government after holding discussions with farmers' leaders. Senior BJP minister Chandrakant Patil will be heading the panel and comprises of senior Shiv Sena minister Agriculture Minister Pandurang Fundkar, Diwakar Raote, Cooperation Minister Subhash Deshmukh, Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar and Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan.

    United fight against terrorism called by - SCO Summit 

    India and Pakistan became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) ending the administrative procedures that started two years ago on 9th June 2017. India's succession to SCO is described as historic and said it would enhance security and promote regional cooperation among member countries. Both the countries were admitted to the SCO group as observers in 2005 and started the administrative process of joining the organisation in 2015.

    This was the first-ever expansion of the group since its formation in 2001. The strength of the grouping rose to eight members and its footprints expanded from Central Asia to South Asia after this accession.
