    Women’s title of the Australian Open Super Series Badminton tournament won by – Saina Nehwal

    Among Important Sports Current Affairs, on 12 June 2016 Badminton player Saina Nehwal won the women’s title of the Australian Open Super Series Badminton tournament. 

    Saina Nehwal defeated Chinese Sun Yu 11-21, 21-14, 21-19, in the final match played at Sydney.

    After this grand win, she also pocketed a cheque of 56250 US dollars.

    Know About Saina Nehwal – 

    • Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal is the first Indian to win a medal in Badminton at the Olympics. She achieved this feat by winning the Bronze medal at the London Olympics 2012 on 4 August 2012.

    • Saina Nehwal is also the first Indian who won the World Junior Badminton Championships and was also the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament, by clinching the Indonesia Open on 21 June 2009. 

    Which country becomes the first country to ban deforestation – Norway

    Among Important International Current Affairs, Norway has become the first country in the world to prohibit deforestation. 

    However, on 26 May 2016 the Norwegian Parliament had pledged to make government’s public procurement policy deforestation-free.

    This step was taken by Norwegian Government based on official recommendations of Norwegian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Energy and Environment as part of the Action Plan on Nature Diversity.

    SEBI issues stricter KYC, disclosure norms for - P-Notes

    Among Important National Current Affairs, The markets regulator SEBI which is also known as Securities and Exchange Board of India has put in place a stricter KYC (Know Your Customer) norms and disclosure regime for Participatory Notes (P-Notes). 

    What is a P-Notes?

    P-Notes are offshore/overseas derivative instruments (ODIs) which are issued by registered foreign institutional investors (FII) to overseas investors. They also provide easier and cost-effective route to foreign investors to invest in Indian markets without directly registering as Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs)

    Which country successfully launches 23rd BeiDou Navigation Satellite – China

    Among Important International Current Affairs, China launched successfully a 23rd BeiDou Navigation Satellite to support its global navigation and also positioning network. 

    From the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China’s Sichuan Province on board of Long March-3C carrier rocket, the satellite was launched. 

    However, it is the 23rd satellite in the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, which is being developed as an alternative to GPS (Global Positioning System) of US.  

    Also, it was the 229th launch of the Long March carrier rocket. 

    Indian-American Author Akhil Sharma wins – 2016 International Dublin Literary Award

    Akhil Sharma, who is an Indian American author won the prestigious 2016 International Dublin Literary Award for his semi-autobiographical novel “Family Life.” 

    Out of an initial 160 nominations, his novel “Family Life” was shortlisted by a panel of judges of award that included novelists Ian Sansom, Juan Pablo Villalobos and Carlo Gebler. 

    However, Family Life is Sharma’s second novel, which took him 13 years to write. Inside the novel you will find the journey of a family that emigrates from New Delhi to New York, where one brother is left severely brain-damaged after a tragedy strikes.

    How many new elements in Periodic table get names – Four

    IUPAC, which is known as The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry has declared four proposed names for the four new elements that were added in periodic table in January 2016. 

    These elements names and symbols were chosen by the nuclear researchers who discovered them. However, they will only be finalised after public review and formal nod by the IUPAC Council.
