    Dipa Karmakar became first Indian woman gymnast to win medal in Commonwealth Games

     On 31st July 2014, Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar clinched bronze medal, thus she became first woman gymnast and second person of the country to win a medal in artistic gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games.

    Dipa Karmakar is 20 year old and hails from Tripura. She collected 14.366 points to finish third in the women's vault final at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.

    First Indian male gymnast to win a medal at CWG was Ashish Kumar. He won a silver in vault and bronze in floor events in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.  

    Deputy National Security Advisor Nehchal Sandhu resigned

     On 30th July 2014, Deputy National Security Adviser Nehchal Sandhu tendered his resignation. His resignation was accepted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31st July 2014.

    Nehchal Sandhu is a 1973 batch IPS officer of Bihar cadre. He was appointed Deputy NSA in March 2013 for a fixed three year term. He was the Director of the Intelligence Bureau between 2010 and 2012.

     

     

     

    SS Mundra appointed as fourth RBI Deputy Governor

     On 31st July 2014, Subhash Sheoratan Mundra took charge as the fourth Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Government of India vide its notification on 30 July 2014 appointed Mundra as the Deputy Governor of RBI for three years from the date of assuming charge of the office. 

    With this appointment, Mundra will look after banking supervision, currency management, financial stability, rural credit, customer service and also the Reserve Bank's human resources & security.

    S S Mundra was the Chairman and Managing Director of Bank of Baroda. He has held a wide range of responsibilities in the domestic as well as international operations of the bank.

    Book written by Natwar Singh, "One Life is Not Enough" released

     On 1st August 2014, Kunwar Natwar Singh's autobiography, "One Life is Not Enough" released. Natwar Singh is former External Affairs Minister. This book has been published by Rupa.

    In the autobiography, Natwar Singh has shared his experiences on several events in the political corridors of Delhi.  He has also described his early years as a diplomat, his proximity to former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, but more pertinently, say sources, to events post-Rajiv Gandhi's assassination in 1991.

    Ghana offers land to Punjab farmers

    On 31st July Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal acceded to a proposal by a delegation from Ghana led by deputy minister for energy and petroleum Benjamin Dagadu to settle progressive farmers in Ghana and assured that a high level delegation from Punjab would visit the African country soon to lay the groundwork for this settlement scheme.

    Why Ghana want Punjabi Farmers to settle there ?

    Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama wanted to promote agriculture as a tool of progress and that Ghana would welcome Punjabi expertise in this regard. SO Ghana govt was also ready to allocate fertile agriculture land on long lease to Punjabi farmers.

    Sierra Leone declares Ebola virus public health emergency

    On 30th July 2014, President of Sierra Leone Ernest Bai Koroma declared a public health emergency in Sierra Leone to curb the deadly Ebola outbreak. Almost 233 have died in Sierra Leone because of Ebola.

    Koroma also announced he was cancelling a visit to Washington for a U.S.-Africa summit next week because of the crisis.

    In March 2014 first Ebola cases were emerged in Guinea, then after it spread across the borders to Liberia and Sierra Leone.
