    Current Affairs 1st January 2016 - Details :

    LRSAM or BARAK 8 missile was successfully test fired from - INS Kolkata

    Among Important National Current Affairs, Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM) - BARAK 8 was successfully test fired from INS Kolkata. It intercepted and destoryed aerial targets. It was first test conducted in India as before this test It was successfully test fired in Israel in November 2015.

    This missile is co-developed by India and Israel. DRDL Hyderabad and Israel Aerospace Industries developed it. 

    This is a special weapon as it will provide power to Indian ships to destory aerial threats at extended ranges.

    Union Cabinet gives nod for India Australia - Civil Nuclear Cooperation deal

    Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the India Australia Civil Nuclear Cooperation deal which will be coming into force  that came into force from 13th November 2015. It will be helping India to get energy security by getting and expanding nuclear power.

    Important to mention here that Australia lifted ban on selling Uranium to India in 2012 and then in 2014 cooperation agreement was signed between two countries in September 2014 to sell uranium as a nuclear fuel for peaceful power generation.

    Prayagraj power project was commissioned by BHEL in - UP

    Prayagraj power project was commissioned by BHEL in UP. It is 660 MW unit in Bara town which is located in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh. This has been commissioned in UP to get more power capacity to attain full load of power.

    It is owned by Prayagraj Power Generation Company Limited (PPGCL), a subsidiary company of Jaiprakash Power Ventures Limited.

    Important to mention here that this unit is super critical which means more eco-friendly and more efficient thermal power plants as they consume less coal as fuel.

    Who was appointed as DG of National Centre for Good Governance - Dr Gyanendra D Bandgaiyan

    Among the important Appointments on 30th December 2015, Dr Gyanendra D Bandgaiyan was appointed as new Director General of the National Centre for Good Governance. He appointment was cleared by Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). He will serving at this post for three years which may be extendable by another two years. 

    Dr Gyanendra D Bandgaiyan is former IAS officer of UT cadre and is from Madhya Pradesh.

    Who was named as Tournament Director of 2016 Hockey India League - Bjorn Isberg

    Among Sports Current Affairs, On 30th December 2015, Bjorn Isberg of Sweden was named as Tournament Director of 2016 Hockey India League. Coal India Hockey India League (HIL) is the premier league for hockey in India. In 2016 it will be 4th edition of HIL. Apart from him Andy Mair from Scotland was named as umpire's manager.

    Ian Murdock passed away, he was founder of - Debian Linux

    Ian Murdock who was founder of the world's best known Linux distributions Debian Linux, passed away on 28th December 2015 in San Francisco. He was 42 years old.

    He was an American software engineer.

    He wrote the Debian Manifesto while a student at Purdue University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in computer science in 1996.

    In January 2006, he was appointed Chief Technology Officer of the Free Standards Group and elected chair of the Linux Standard Base workgroup. THen he left Linux foundation and joined Sun Microsystems in 2007 where he lead project Indiana. Nowadays he was working for Docker, Inc.
