    Former IFS and MP Syed Shahabuddin passed away on - 4th March 2017

    Former Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and Member of Parliament (MP) Syed Shahabuddin passed away because of prolonged illness at a hospital in Delhi NCR on 4th March 2017. He was 82 at the time of his death.

    Interesting Highlights

    •  Shahabuddin was the former President of All India Muslim Majlis Mushawarat.
    •  Shahabuddin worked as a diplomat for the Indian Foreign Services. 
    •  He later became a politician and served three terms from 1979-1996 as a Member of Parliament of India.
    •  He edited and published a monthly journal Muslim India in 1983, a journal of research and documentation that no research scholar working on Indian Muslims can afford to ignore. 

    World Hearing Day observed on - 3rd March 2017

    The World Hearing Day 2017 was observed globally with the theme 'Action for hearing loss: make a sound investment' on 3rd March 2017. It aims to raise the awareness and promote ear and hearing care all over the world. 

    Key Points

    • Hearing loss poses a high cost for the economy globally and has a significant impact on the affected lives. 
    • Hearing loss and its consequences can be prevented through prevention, screening for early identification, rehabilitation through hearing devices, captioning and sign language education. 
    • Most of the hearing loss can be avoided through prevention. 

    Penalty revision by private banks after 4 free transactions - Rs 150

    ICICI, Axis and HDFC banks, have decided to charge minimum Rs 150 on cash withdrawals and deposit at bank branches after four free transactions.

    • The basic intention to impose charges is to discourage cash transactions and promoting the digital payment drive.
    • HDFC Bank says that the bank would also cap the third party cash transactions to Rs 25000 daily.
    • In Axis Bank, the first five transactions or Rs 10 lakhs of cash deposits or withdrawals would be free and charged at Rs5/1000 rupees or Rs 150, whichever is higher.

    Best University award 2017 goes to - Jawaharlal Nehru

    Jawaharlal Nehru University has been awarded with Visitor's Award for the best University by Pranab Mukherjee , president of India on 2nd March 2017. The visitor's award for 'Research' was won by Dr. Shyam Sunder from Banaras Hindu University and professor Niranjan Karak from Tezpur University.

    • Jawaharlal Nehru University is a public central university in New Delhi.
    •  It was established in the year 1969 by an Act of parliament. G. Parthsarthi. He was the first vice-chancellor of the university.
    •  It is best known for leading faculties and research emphasis on liberal arts and applied science.

    Humanitarian of the Year award 2017 awarded to  singer - Rihanna by Harvard University

    Singer Robyn Rihanna Fenty awarded with the 2017 Peter J Gomes Humanitarian of the Year Award of the Harvard University 28th February 2017. She was awarded for her charity work of building a state-of-the-art centre of oncology and nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat breast cancer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown, Barbados.

    • She has sold more than 200 million records and won eight grammy awards.
