    Union Government launches which nation-wide programme for promoting breastfeeding – MAA

    Among Important National Current Affairs, on 5th August 2016, Union Health Minister J P Nadda launched a nation-wide programme MAA - Mothers’ Absolute Affection, with the purpose of promoting breastfeeding.

    Here, the goal of the programme is to enhance optimal breastfeeding practices.

    • Do You Know – 

    MAA is known to be an intensified programme of the Health Ministry for creating an enabling environment to ensure that mothers, husbands and families receive adequate information and support for promotion of breastfeeding.

    The grand ceremony of 2016 Rio Olympics held in - Maracana Stadium, Brazil

    Among Important Sports Current Affairs, on 5th August 2016, the 31st Summer Olympic Games officially began with inaugural ceremony, which held at the Maracana Stadium in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.

    In the presence of International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach and United Nations chief, Ban-Ki Moon, the Rio Olympics Game was declared open by Brazil’s Acting President Michel Temer.

    However, after declaration of the Games by President Temer, the Brazilian 2004 Athens Olympics marathon bronze winner Vanderlei de Lima lit the Olympic cauldron. 

    He also lit the lamp after former tennis world number one and three-time French Open winner Gustavo Kuerten brought the torch into the arena.

    Union Government aims to roll out GST from - April 1, 2017

    From 1st April 2017, the Union Government has set the ambitious target to roll out of the Goods and Services Tax, (GST). 

    However, it was announced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley after unveiling a detailed road map for GST implementation. This announcement was made after Rajya Sabha had passed.

    World Breastfeeding Week 2016 will be observed from - 1-7 August

    Among Important International Current Affairs, from 1 to 7 August the 2016 World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is being observed across the world. 

    The theme for the year 2016 World Breastfeeding Week is ‘Breastfeeding: A key to Sustainable Development’. The main aim of the theme is raising awareness of the links between breastfeeding and the Sustainable Development Goals.

    However, this week is organized by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF. 

    Gujarat HC quashes state government notification for - EBC Quota

    Among Important National Current Affairs, on 4th August Gujarat high court quashed the state government's notification granting 10 percent reservation for the economically backward classes (EBCs).

    Major Highlights are here -

    • On 1st May 2016, the Court termed the notification as unconstitutional, which was issued by Anandiben Patel Government granting 10 percent quota for EBCs in higher educational institutions and government jobs.

    • It also termed the Notification as unconstitutional as the total reservation exceeds 50 percent.
