When two people get married, no one should interfere: Supreme Court stated on - 5th February 2018

The Supreme Court of India on February 5th, 2018 governed that 2 adults are free to get married and no 3rd person, party, parents or society or khap panchayats, have any right to harm them.
The decision was made against the acts of honour killing by 3-judge bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra and consisting of Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud.
With this decision, the pinnacle court upheld the fundamental right of citizens by giving them freedom to decide about their marriage according their wish and live peacefully.
The decision came after activist Madhu Kishwar gave information about the Supreme Court about the last murder of Ankit Saxena, a young boy who was murdered by his lover's parents on the basis of honour killing.
Thus, the court stressed that no one has any collective right to harass any couple.
The court also ruled that it is up to the courts to finalise legally whether a marriage is null and void or children are legitimate or illegitimate, or in the case of any property dispute, nobody else has the right to intervene.
The pinnacle court also asked the government to propose guidelines to restrict honour killings.
