    3rd consecutive US Open clinched by Serena Williams

    Among important sports current affairs, On 7th September, World number one Serena Williams, a American professional player clinched her third consecutive US Open trophy. She defeated Caroline Wozniazki of Denmark to reach this milestone. She defeated Denmark Caroline Wozniazki in straight sets by 6-3, 6-3.

    Sushma Swaraj Bahrain visit highlights

    Union Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj visited Bahrain from 6 Sep to 7 Sep 2014. This two day visit was her first official visit to the  Bahrain and to the Gulf.

    She interacted with top Bahraini leadership and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of the Kingdom of Bahrain during the visit.

    Regional and Global issues of mutual interest were discussed during the visit. 

    She also attended inaugural Indian Diaspora Engagement meet for Indian businesses in Bahrain which was organised by Overseas Indian Facilitation Center (OIFC), this meet was held in Manama.

    Undertrial prisoners who have completed half of maximum term to be released by order of SC

    On 5th September 2014, The Supreme Court of India ordered release of undertrial prisoners who have completed half of their maximum term without the completion of trial.

    Important to note that prisoners serving life term or charged with death penalty will not come under this.

    A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) RM Lodha while expressing concern that more than 60 percent of prisoners are undertrails, has given two months deadline to examine such cases and to order the release of undertrials.

    JNU professor Priyadarsi Mukherji got awarded with prestigious China Book Award

    On 5th September 2014, JNU professor Priyadarsi Mukherji was awarded with China Book Award by China. He was honoured for his excellent work and long term contribution to the translation of Chinese works.

    China Book Award is a special award given by China to honour the people who have given great and long lasting contributions to introducing Chinese books overseas.

    Professor Priyadarsi Mukherji was awarded at a ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

    World Literacy Day observed across the globe
