    Union Government to introduce - International Yoga Award Scheme

    Among Important National Current Affairs, on 8 June 2016 The Union Government planned to introduce International Yoga Award Scheme. The aim of this award is to promote yoga.

    Currently, only the AYUSH ministry is working on the scheme and it will start giving the award from the year 2017.

    Know About International Yoga Day –

    • As we all know Yoga Day is celebrated every year on June 21 and it was also declared to be internationally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 11, 2014.

    • Yoga is known to be a physical, mental, and spiritual practice or discipline that originated in India. 

    Which country tops in 2016 Malware Infection Index – Pakistan

    Among Important International Current Affairs, in the list of 19 countries figuring in the 2016 Malware Infection Index (MII) in the Asia-Pacific region, Pakistan has topped the list. By the technology giant Microsoft in which India was placed at 8th position, the index for the Asia-Pacific region has been released.

    This index also explains the key malware threats in the Asia-Pacific region and ranks markets in Asia-Pacific according to how much they are affected. 

    However, more than about 40% of computers in the 19 countries in Asia-Pacific region are infected against the global average being around 20%.

    Which tennis player receives two-year suspension for failing drug test - Maria Sharapova

    Among Important Sports Current Affairs, on 8 June 2016 Maria Sharapova was suspended for atleast two years from Tennis by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

    She is suspended because of a prohibited drug. However, Maria Sharapova will remain under suspension for two years, commencing on 26 January 2016.

    In March 2016, The Russian tennis sensation was provisionally banned after testing positive for meldonium at Australian Open in January 2016.

    • Maria Yuryevna Sharapova is a Russian professional tennis player. 

    • Sharapova has competed on the WTA tour since 2001. She has also been ranked world No. 1 in singles by the WTA on five separate occasions, for a total of 21 weeks

    Which country becomes third largest oil consumer – India

    Among Important National Current Affairs, as per BP Statistical Review of World Energy India released, has surpassed Japan to become the world’s third-largest oil consumer. 

    However, with the demand of 4.1 million barrels a day (bpd), India has become the third-largest consumer behind the United States (19.39 million bpd) and China (11.96 million bpd).

    Do You Know – 

    • In 2015, India has accounted for 4.5% of world oil consumption and its oil demand galloped 8.1% in the same year 2015. 

    • India’s oil demand growth had also surpassed China’s 6.3 per cent expansion. Whereas, the US oil consumption has grown by 1.6% in the year 2015 and it demand share accounts for 19.7% of the total world demand of 95 million bpd in 2015.

    WHO validates elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis in four countries including - Thailand

    WHO, which is known as World Health Organization (WHO) recognised Thailand, Armenia, Belarus and Moldova on 8 June 2016, for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV and Syphilis too.

    In New York, on the eve of the United Nations General-Assembly High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS this announcement was made. 

    Also on this special occasion, the representatives of these four countries were presented with the certificate of validation for the accomplishments.

    World Bank Report cuts global growth forecast to - 2.4%

    In 2016, on global economic prospects, The World Bank in its report has cut global growth forecast to 2.4% and in 2017 it will be 2.8%. 

    However, the growth rate was lower than its earlier forecast of 2.9% and 3.1% respectively, mainly on account of a slower than expected recovery in advanced economies.

    The cut in global forecast was also due to mediocre growth, which is experienced by advanced economies, while low commodity prices, weak global trade and stilted capital flows also impacted. 

    Please note, India will remain one of the fastest growing major economies, ahead of China, for the next three years.
