    How many Indo-Canadians honoured with ICCC Annual Awards - Eleven

    Among the important International Current Affairs, On 6th June 2015, for strengthening bilateral ties and their business achievements besides contributions to the economy, eleven Indo-Canadians were honoured with ICCC Annual Awards 2015. The award carry a citation and trophy.

    The award was presented at the annual gala award ceremony held at Toronto by Toronto Mayor John Tory and President of the Indo-Canada Chambers of Commerce (ICCC) DP Jain.

    Members in the list of awardees includes Prashant Pathak, Neeru Gupta, Avinash Mehra, Nisha Agnihotri, Manjul Bhargava, Hargurdeep Singh, Avish Sood, Rajiv Manucha, Asim Ghosh, Jag Parmar and Venkatesh Mannar.

    India's High Commissioner to Canada Vishnu Prakash, Governor General David Johnston, Premier of Ontario Kathleen Wynne and Prime Minister Stephen Harper congratulated the awardees for strengthening the ties between the two countries.

    Besides, the President's Award 2015 for outstanding contributions in promoting bilateral trade and investment between India and Canada was awarded to Frank Scarpitti, Mayor of Markham.

    Among the important International Current Affairs, On 8th June 2015, the World’s most valuable brand in the World football with 1.2 billion US dollars is The Manchester United and became the first club to pass the 1 billion US dollar mark.

    A study titled Football 50 2015 released by the Brand Finance, a leading brand valuation and strategy consultancy, revealed it.

    Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were beaten by the United to reclaim their position as the biggest brand in world football.

    The record-breaking deals of the club driven up the brand value which includes UK broadcast deal for Premier League rights commencing from the 2016-17 season.

    Who has won Indonesia Open Badminton titles - Momota and Ratchanok

    Among the important Sports Current Affairs, On 7th June 2015, Shuttler Kento Momota and Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon won the men’s and women’s singles respectively of the Indonesia Open Badminton tournament held at Jakarta, Indonesia with the total prize money of 800000 US dollars at stake.

    In the women's singles final, world No.6 and former world champion Ratchanok defeated Japan's Yui Hashimoto. Temporarily, South Korea's Ko Sung Hyun and Shin Baek Choel beat China's Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan to win the men's double title.

    In the women's doubles final, China's Tang Jinhua and Tian Qing defeated Indonesia's Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Grysia Polii. Xu Chen and Ma Jin who beat Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei won the mix double title.

    2015 Canada Grand Prix of Formula 1 was won by - Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain

    Among the important Sports Current Affairs, On 7th June 2015, Mercedes racing driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain won the 2015 Formula 1 Canada Grand Prix title by winning the final race held in Montreal, Canada.

    Nico Rosberg of Germany finished at the second position while Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany was at the third position.

    Sergio Perez (Mexico) and Nico Hulkenberg (Germany) of Force India stood at the 11th and 12nd positions respectively.

    Director General of National Security Guard - RC Tayal

    Among the important appointments, On 8th June 2015, Senior IPS Officer RC Tayal was appointed as the Director General (DG) of National Security Guard (NSG). He replaced JN Choudhury who retired on 31 May 2015.

    Earlier to this appointment, Tayal was serving as the Special Director General (DG) in paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He is a Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer of 1980-batch.

    About National Security Guard (NSG)

    • NSG was raised in 1984 as a federal contingency force with an aim to undertake counter-terror and counter-hijack operations and it was later tasked to protect high-risk VVIPs.
    • It operates under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and is headed by the Director General of the Indian Police Service (IPS).
    • They are also known as Black Cats because of the black drill cotton coveralls and for the black helmets that they wear.

    Name the cyclone that intensified into severe cyclonic storm - Cyclone ASHOBAA

    On 8th June 2015, Cyclonic storm ASHOBAA was in news after it developed into a cyclonic storm from only a depression that formed over the Arabian Sea.

    The cyclone is centered at 17.9°N and 67.2°E and is lying about 470 km southwest of Veraval, Gujarat and 590 km west-southwest of Mumbai.

    According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the cyclone will carry heavy rainfall at most places over Goa, Konkan, south Gujarat and coastal Karnataka. Strong winds ranging 70 to 120 kilometers per hour will also be carried by it.

    ASHOBAA is the first tropical storm of the pre-monsoon season in the Indian seas which developed into a cyclone after sustaining strength.

    Who is appointed as Chief Vigilance Commissioner - KV Chowdary

    Among the important appointments, On 8th June 2015, 1978-batch IRS officer KV Chowdary was appointed as the Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC). He was appointed by President Pranab Mukherjee on the recommendation of Selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    With this appointment, Chowdary became first non-IAS officer to head the CVC since it was formed. He is a IRS officer of the Income Tax cadre of 1978-batch.

    Earlier to this appointment, Chowdary was working as an Adviser to the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team which is examining cases of black money. He had also served as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes.

    About Central Vigilance Commission (CVC)

    • In February 1964, CVC was set up by the Union Government on the recommendation of the K. Santhanam Committee.
    • It is free of control from any executive authority as per the provisions of Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) Act, 2003
    • The CVC is headed by a Central Vigilance Commissioner and has two Vigilance Commissioners.

    Name the Chief Information Commissioner of India - Vijai Sharma

    Among the important appointments, On 8th June 2015, Vijai Sharma was appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner in the Central Information Commission (CIC). He will serve a period of 5 years or till he attain the age of 65, whatever comes first. Earlier to this appointment, he was serving as an Information Commissioner in Central Information Commission. He is a IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh Cadre of 1974 batch. He has a remarkable work experience in Administration & Governance and Law & Policy in Central and State Governments and in the United Nations. About Chief Information Commissioner • The Chief Information Commissioner is appointed by the President of India on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising of a Union Cabinet Minister, the leader of single largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha and Prime Minister. • Complete administrative and financial powers of a Department of the Union Government were enjoyed by him except in matters relating to the creation of posts, re-appropriation and writing-off losses.
