India re-elected as member of ITU council till 2022 from - 2019

India has been designated as a member of the International Telecommunications Union Council- ITU for additional four years from 2019 to 2022. The declaration was done by the Union Government on November 6th, 2018. Talking on this, Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha informed that department is pleased to see India as a member of the International Telecommunications Union Council again. This is a recognition of the role that India plays in the area of Telecom and ICT on the global stage.”  
Important Highlights

• The elections to the Council were organised during the continuous International Telecommunications Union Council Plenipotentiary Conference 2018 at Dubai. 
• India won 165 votes and placed 3rd among the 13 nations designated to the council from the Asia-Australasia region and 8th among the 48 nations elected to the council globally.
• The International Telecommunications Union Council has 193-member states, which chose representatives to the council. 
• India has been an active member of the International Telecommunications Union Council since 1869, sincerely supporting the development and proliferation of telecom in the global community of countries.

The centre is anticipated to be made operational by January 2019.

US exempts India from imposition of sanctions development of Chabahar Port in - Iran

USA has relieved India from imposition of few authorizations for development of strategically situated
Chabahar port in Iran, along with building of railway line connecting it with landlocked Afghanistan. The
decision comes into existence following United States imposed toughest permissions on Iran under Iran
Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act, 2012.

• The exclusions to India are with respect to expansion of Chabahar port, building of associated railway lines and for shipment of non-authorised goods via port for Afghanistan’s usage, and the nation’s continued imports of Iranian petroleum produces.
• This exclusion relates to reconstruction assistance and economic development for Afghanistan.
• These events are vigorous for continuing support of Afghanistan’s growth and humanitarian relief.
• It is also part of United States President Donald Trump’s South Asia strategy which emphasizes United States’s constant support of Afghanistan’s economic growth and development and close partnership with India.
