    First BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise 2017 to be conducted in - India

    The first BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise 2017 (BIMSTEC DMEx-2017) will be conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) as the lead agency between 10th October and 13th October 2017 in the National Capital Region (NCR).
    This Exercise will be serving as a platform to share best practices on all aspects of Disaster Risk Reduction, strengthening regional response and coordination to manage Disaster among the BIMSTEC member countries.
    It was decided at the 17th BIMSTEC Senior Officials Meeting held in Kathmandu, Nepal on 7th February 2017 that India would be organizing the first annual Disaster Management Exercise for the area.
    Important highlights

    • Delegates from all seven nations of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) grouping, namely Bangladesh,Nepal, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand, will be participating in the event.
    • The main focus of the BIMSTEC DMEx-2017 will be on testing the preparedness of the region sand resilience towards effective activation of inter-Governmental  interaction/dialogue/agreements for an immediate deployment of regional resources for the disaster response.
    • The BIMSTEC DMEx-2017 will be conducted in two phases in Delhi/NCR.
    • The main exercise will be comprising of Table Top Exercise (TTX), Field Training Exercise (FTX) and After Action Review (AAR) which is scheduled between 10th October to 13th October 2017.
    • It will be helping to create synergy and synchronize efforts to institutionalize regional cooperation among the member countries.
    • The exercise will be helping in strengthening the effective utilization of the search & rescue teams for disaster relief & emergency response, including emergency rapid assessment teams and management of mass casualties especially in situations involving breakdown of infrastructure and communication.
    • At the end of the four-day Exercise, a publication will be brought out on the outcomes and recommendations of the joint exercise and be including agreement among BIMSTEC Nations on regional cooperation for the Disaster Management and Emergency Response.

    Economics Nobel for Behavioral Economics awarded to - Richard Thaler

    Richard H. Thaler from University of Chicago has been awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Economics for his valuable contributions in Behavioral Economics. Richard Thaler has integrated psychologically realistic assumptions into analyses of economic decision-making.  His work to bridge the gap between psychology and economics won him the Nobel Economics Prize.

    • He has proved how some of the individual traits like social preferences,limited rationality, and lack of self control systematically affect individual decisions and market outcomes.
    • Thaler’s pragmatic findings and theoretical insights have been influential towards creating the new and rapidly expanding field of behavioural economics, which has had a deep impact on many areas of economic study and policy.

    • Richard Thaler is a Behavioral Science and Economics Professor at University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
    • He has also co-authored the global best seller Nudge in 2008 in which he tackled many of society’s major problems through the concepts of behavioral economics.

    • The economics noble prize wasn't a part of the original group of awards set out in Alfred Nobel’s will in 1895.This award's winner gets 9-million-kronor ($1.1-million) prize.
    • The only Indian economist who won this prestigious award is Amartya Sen in 1998 for his contributions to welfare economics.

     Rafael Nadal beats Nick Kyrgios to win 6th ATP title of 2017 on - 8th October 2017

    Rafael Nadal beat Nick Kyrgios of Australia in straight sets of 6-2, 6-1 in the China Open final to win his sixth ATP title of 2017 on 8th October 2017. Simultaneously , in the women’s event, France’s Caroline Garcia also defeated world no.1 Simona Halep from Romania in straight sets of 6-4, 7-6 (3).
    Top-ranked Nadal, who was tied with Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev at five titles this season, surpassed them with this win followed by 75th career singles trophy in Beijing.
    On the other hand , Garcia lost to Halep two times previously they played against each other, won her second consecutive WTA title After this win, she has now climbed up 6 ranks from the 15th rank to the 9th in the latest WTA singles rankings list, making her debut entry among the top-10.

    This win was also Nadal’s second consecutive hard court title after losing his last 8 consecutive hard court finals. It is also his 2nd title at Beijing following his 2005 win. He has reached the China Open finals title four times. The 31-year-old’s six trophies this year include a record 10th title at the French Open and a third at the U.S. Open.  The last time in 2013 he won at least six titles when he captured 10 trophies for the season.

    Important Highlights of the match

    • Australia’s Kyrgios was struggling with his nerve right from when the match started and he never managed to get it again a confident range.
    • In contrast to that, Nadal always looked in charge and saved all four break points he faced.
    • Kyrgios offered Nadal eight break points in the first set with Nadal taking two service breaks.
    • Kyrgios got angry by a line call in the 1st set and his complaints eventually costed him a penalty point at the start of the eighth game.
    • Kyrgios did not make it onto the board in the second set until he was serving with Nadal already leading 5-0.
    • Nadal leads Kyrgios 3-2 during career meetings, and 2-1 this season.

    International Conference on Dialogue of Civilizations – IV by - The Ministry of Culture

    The Ministry of Culture, Government of India and Archaeological Survey of India in partnership with NGS-National Geographic Society is hosting an international conference on “Dialogue of Civilizations – IV” between 8th and 15th October, 2017 in Delhi, Gandhinagar and Dholavira.

    This would be the 4th conference in this series of ‘dialogues’ initiated by NGS in 2013 with a purpose to promote scholar and public dialogue about the five ancient, literate civilizations of the world, i.e. Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, South Asia and Mesoamerica and how the study of the past can share our present & future towards the right direction.

    1st conference of this series was launched in Guatemala followed by Turkey in 2014 & China in 2015. The present convention is the 4th in this series, with the concluding dialogue planned in Egypt.
    The inaugural function was followed by a lecture by various renowned experts on various topics which are ranging from Harappan civilization to Aryan envasion.

    International intellectual from different countries have participated in the Conference Prof. B.B. Lal, Dr. Francisco Estrada-Belli , Prof. Augusta McMohan, Dr. Anna Latifa-Mourad and Prof. Xinwei Li.
