Mr. Nabam Tuki sworn-in as the eighth Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh
Veteran Congress leader Mr. Nabam Tuki sworn-in as the eighth Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh for the second consecutive term, which is important among political Current Affairs. Oath of office was administered by Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma. Function was held at Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in capital Itanagar.
Most of the newly-elected Congress MLAs, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Mukut Mithi, AICC general secretary (in charge of Arunachal) Luzhino Faleiro and high ranking government officials were present in the ceremony.
Mr. Nabam Tuki said that his government's priorities would be on youth development, improvement of road and telecommunication in the state and to execute all on-going projects on time.
Mr. Nabam Tuki belongs to the Nyishi community.
Former Tata Steels Chairman Russi Mody passed away
Russi Mody, Former Chairman and Managing Director of Tata Steel passed away in Kolkata on 16th May 2014, He was 96 years old. He joined Tata Steel in 1939 rose to the position of Director of Personnel in 1953. In 1970, he was appointed as Director of Operations and became Joint Managing Director in 1972.
After retiring from Tata Steel in 1993, Mody was appointed as Joint Chairman of Indian Airlines and Air India.
Important to note :
Russi Mody was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1989 by the Government of India for his contribution to the Indian Industry.
President of India dissolved 15th Lok Sabha
On 18th May 2014, President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee dissolved the 15th Lok Sabha. President dissolved the Lok Sabha on the advice of outgoing Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who resigned on 17 May 2014.
Union Cabinet recommended the President to dissolve the 15th Lok Sabha as a follow up to the election results of 16th Lok Sabha election. This will make way to the formation of new government.
To enable the President to form a new government, the Election Commission (EC) headed by Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath submitted the list of newly 543 elected members of the 16th Lok Sabha to the President.

- EC submit list of elected members to President in accordance with the Section 73 of the Representation of the People's Act, 1951.
- President of India has the power to dissolve the Lok Sabha in accordance with the Article 85 (2)(b) of the Constitution of India.
Three time F-1 champion Sir Jack Brabham died in Australia
On 19th May 2014, Sir Jack Brabham, the three-time Formula One world champion passed away at his home in Australia after a long illness. He was 88 years old. He was also known as Black Jack.
He won the F-1 titles in 1959, 1960 and 1966. In 1966, he won the F-1 title in his own car named Brabham, which was built by him.

Till now, Sir Jack Brabham is the only man, who won a title in the F1 world championship in a car designed and built by him.
The veteran nuclear scientist N Srinivasan passed away
Veteran nuclear scientist and Padma Bhushan recipient, N Srinivasan passed away due to cardiac arrest on 18th May 2014.. He was 84 years old.
Srinivasan joined the Department of Atomic Energy in 1953 and was the design engineer for the plutonium plant at Trombay. He established the indigenous technology for reprocessing spent fuels from thermal reactors
As Chief Executive of Heavy Water Board, he enabled the country attain self-sufficiency in Heavy Water production.
He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in year 2000.
Serena Williams won the Women's and Novak Djokovic won Men's Italian Tennis Open 2014 title
Among the Sports Current Affairs, On 18th May 2014, Serena Williams of US won the Women's Italian Tennis Open 2014 for the third time. She defeated World No. 11 Sara Errani of Italy by 6-3, 6-0 in the final held in Rome, Italy.
Among men Novak Djokovic of Sebia won the men's Italian Tennis Open 2014. He defeated Rafael Nadal of Spain by 4-6, 6-3 and 6-3 in the final.
The Italian Open 2014 was held in Rome Italy from 11 May 2014 to 18 May 2014. It is red clay tennis tournament after French Tournament. It is also known as Rome Masters or Italians Championships.
C Rangarajan, PM Economic Advisory Council Chairman resigned
On 19th May, PMEAC Chairman Chakravarthi Rangarajan resigned. He sent his resignation to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Since the term of the PMEAC was parallel to that of the Prime Minister, hence with the resignation of the PM Manmohan Singh on 17 May 2014, the PMEAC also needs to resign.
Though the PMEAC was headed by Chakravarthi Rangarajan, its members were :
- Saumitra Chaudhuri,
- V.S. Vyas,
- Pulin B. Nayak and
- Dilip M. Nachane.

C Rangarajan has been the Chairman of PMEAC since 2005. He is a well known economist and a former Member of Parliament. He has also served at the Reserve Bank as its governor from 1992-97.
