    Arun Jaitley, Karan Singh and Sharad Yadav felicitated with Outstanding Parliamentarian Awards

    On 12th August 2014, President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Outstanding Parliamentarian Awards on Arun Jaitley, Dr Karan Singh and Sharad Yadav. The awards were given for their invaluable contribution in discharge of their parliamentary duties. The awards were given at Balyogi Auditorium in Parliament Library, New Delhi.

    President while conferring the awards asked all Parliamentarians to uphold the prestige and dignity of Parliament, as it’s a responsibility of every Parliamentarian.

    Following are the details of awards given :

    • BJP leader Arun Jaitley received the award for the year 2010
    • Congress Veteran Karan Singh received the award for the year 2011
    • JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav received the award for the year for 2012

    Legendary Burra Katha expert Daroji Eramma passed away

    On 12th August 2014, Daroji Eramma, one of the last exponents of Burra katha passed away. She was 80 years old. Daroji Eramma belonged to the Budaga Janagama community, a nomadic tribe. She had exceptional expertise in Burra katha, thats why she was She was honoured with Nadoja Award, honorary doctorate in Kannada, by Kannada University, Hampi. She also received Rajyotsava Award in 1999, Best folk artiste award from Prasara Bharathi and Janapada Shri Award in 2010.

    Burra Katha is the folk art form of storytelling based on mythological and social themes. It is performed in the regions of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

    Crown found off Harappan site in UP

    Human skull with carnelian beads embedded copper crown was discovered in Chandayan village of Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh. The crown is 18 centimeter long and 13 centimeter broad. 

    Apart from this, few pieces of terracotta pottery were also discovered at the site.   

    Former RBI Governor Bimal Jalan to head the Expenditure Management Commission

     Bimal Jalan, former RBI Governor, will head Expenditure Management Commission which will suggest ways to reduce food, fertiliser and oil subsidies to contain the fiscal deficit. The Union Government decided to appoint former RBI governor Bimal Jalan as the head of the Expenditure Management Commission on 12 August 2014.
