    Who has been appointed as UPSC chairman - Alka Sirohi

    Among Important National Current Affairs, President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed former IAS officer Alka Sirohi as a chairman of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as per Article 316 of Constitution.

    Alka Sirohi will replace Deepak Gupta who demits office on 20th September 2016. 

    However, she will be in office till completion of her term as member on January 3, 2017.

    Know About Alka Sirohi – 

    • Alka Sirohi is a retired IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre. 

    • Before this appointment, she was also the member of the UPSC. 

    China, Russia conduct joint naval exercises Joint Sea-2016 in - South China Sea

    Among International Current Affairs, China and Russia have finally carried out joint naval exercises dubbed as Joint Sea-2016 in the resource-rich South China Sea (SCS) off China’s southern Guangdong province. 

    However, the exercises follow a spike in tensions after Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague rejected China’s claims in the SCS and slammed it for causing environmental damage there.

    Guided Missile Destroyer Ship Mormugao launched in – Mumbai

    Among Important National Current Affairs, on 17th September 2016 the Guided Missile Destroyer, Mormugao, second ship of Project 15B, was launched at Mazagaon Dock Ship Builders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.

    However, this marks a significant milestone in the annals of the Indigenous Warship design and construction programme of India.

    The Game of Thrones won best drama at - 68th Primetime Emmy Awards

    Among Important Entertainment Current Affairs, the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards was announced on 18 September 2016 at the Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles, California, U.S.

    Here, the Game of Thrones won the best drama series at the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards, while Veep took home the top comedy award.

    However, the People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story also earned several awards, whereas Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her fifth consecutive Emmy in the lead comedy actress category.

    Which Indian shooter wins gold at ISSF Junior World Cup in Azerbaijan - Subhankar Pramanick

    Among Important Sports Current Affairs, Young Indian shooter Subhankar Pramanick has won the gold medal at the ISSF Junior World Cup for pistol, rifle and shotgun in Gabala, Azerbaijan. 

    Here, he won the gold medal in 50-metre rifle prone event with overall 205.5 score to finish top of the podium.Czech Republic’s Filip Nepejchal (205.2) followed in second position, while Romania’s Dragomir Iordache (185.1) was placed third at the end of the finals. 

    Also India’s Sambhaji Patil had won second gold medal when he won the junior men’s 25-metre standard pistol event by shooting 562 score. 

    Indian-origin Ravi Reddy appointed as Head of International Society for - Blood Transfusion

    Among Important International Current Affairs, on 18th September 2016 an Indian-origin South African Ravi Reddy appointed as the Head of International Society for Blood Transfusion (ISBT), headquartered in Amsterdam.

    However, after this, Reddy became the first person from the African continent to head ISBT, a global organisation of medicine professionals working for the safety of blood transfusion worldwide.

    Malayalam critic M Leelavathy chosen for - N Mohanan Suvarna Mudra Award 2016

    On 17th September, 2016 Eminent Malayalam critic and academician M Leelavathy was chosen for the prestigious N Mohanan Suvarna Mudra Award 2016, which is instituted in memory of well-known short story writer N Mohanan.

    However, an expert panel comprising journalists M G Radhakrishnan and M Saritha Varma and Athmaraman, have selected Leelavathy for the biennial award considering her contributions to Malayalam language and literature.

    Scientists successfully grow three-dimensional lungs in lab using - Stem Cells 

    Among Important International Current Affairs, Scientists in the United States including those of Indian origin have successfully grown three-dimensional (3D) lungs in the lab, using stem cells.

    However, the 3D lungs or organoids was created by coating tiny gel beads with lung-derived stem cells and then allowing them to self-assemble into the shapes of the air sacs found in human lungs. 

    Also to show that these tiny organoids mimicked the structure of actual human lungs, researchers compared it with real sections of human lung.
