    Who has been appointed as Director General of CISF - Surender Singh

    Among the important appointments, On 1st May 2015, Senior IPS officer Surender Singh was appointed as Director General (DG) of central paramilitary force Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). He is a 1980-batch police officer of West Bengal.

    Prior to this appointment, he had served as a Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau. Prime Minister Narendra Modi heading Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) confirmed his appointment.

    Operations of MESSENGER Mission to Mercury was ended by - NASA

    Among the important International Current Affairs, On 30th April 2015, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) ended the operations of MESSENGER Mission. On 3rd August 2004, Mercury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging (MESSENGER) mission was launched to study Mercury’s atmosphere.

    After the Expected Impact (EI) of the spacecraft on Mercury’s surface the journey came to an end. It tumbled to the Mercury’s surface at a speed of 14000 kmph, causing a crater up to 52 feet wide.

    By March 2012, the primary science objectives of the mission were completed, the spacecraft’s mission was increased two times, allowing it to capture images and information about the planet in detail.

    Nitin Gadkari dedicated two Major Highway Projects in - North East

    Among the important National Current Affairs, On 1st May 2015, Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari dedicated Shillong Bypass Highway Project and four lane Jorabat-Barapani Section of NH-40 to the nation.

    The two projects are dedicated to improve connectivity between Shillong and Guwahati and other parts of the North East. Four laning of 61.80 km Jorabat-Barapani section is dedicated to extend connectivity between Shillong and Guwahati.

    The 48.76 Km Shillong Bypass was constructed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) mode and connects National Highway (NH) 40 and NH 44 (New NH 6). This will help to clear the traffic in the city of Shillong from heavy vehicles in moving towards or coming from the North Eastern parts of Mizoram, Tripura and Assam.

    Motor Sports is recognised as Sports under NSF by - Union Sports Ministry

    Among the important Sports Current Affairs, On 23rd March 2015, Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports recognised Motor Sports as a sport by including it in the list of sports ministry-backed National Sports Federations (NSF).

    59 sports along with Motor Sports are recognised by the Ministry during the assessment of categorization of various sports discipline into ‘Others’, ‘Priority’ and ‘High Priority’.

    Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), the governing body for the motor sports in India welcomed the decision to include Motor Sports as Sports under NSF.

    Spring Imperial Decorations of Japan is to be conferred to - Four Indians

    On 29th April 2015, Four Indians will be conferred with the Spring Imperial Decorations of Japan. On 8th May 2015, These Indians will receive the award at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo along with 81 other foreign recipients. Emperor of Japan Akihito will present the awards..

    • Thottuvelil Krishna Pillai Aiyappankutty Nair (75): He is a former Advisor and Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh. He was awarded for the contribution to the enhancement of relations and the promotion of friendship between Japan and India.
    • Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao (80): He is the Honorary President of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advance Scientific Research Centre. In 2014, he was awarded with the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna. He was awarded for contribution to promoting academic interchange and mutual understanding in science and technology between Japan and India.

    • Nikunj Parekh (74): He is the Director of Bonsai Study Group of Indo-Japanese Association, Mumbai and President of Indo-Japanese Association, Mumbai. He was awarded for contribution to promoting and presenting Japanese Culture in India

    • Topgay Bhutia (64): Former local employee of the Embassy of Japan in India was awarded for his contribution to the activities of the Japanese overseas establishment.

    A Book titled China – Confucius in the Shadows has been written by - Poonam Surie

    Among the important National Current Affairs, On 1st May 2015, A Book titled China – Confucius in the Shadows was released by the Vice President M. Hamid Ansari. Confucius was considered as the most efficient author in Chinese history. Poonam Surie has authored this book. She is an Adjunct Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies in Delhi.

    The book underlines that in the evolving socio political milieu of China; interpreting Confucian philosophy as being non-confrontationist, benevolent and with values such as filial piety and harmony could help the current political regime deal with such problems as corruption and rising inequalities.
