    Labour Day was observed globally on - 1st May 2019

    The Labour Day was observed globally on 1st May 2019. This day is also called as International Worker's Day as well as May Day. The working classes  celebrated the day and promoted it by the international labour movement, communists and socialists .  More than 90 countries, including North Korea, celebrate Labour Day on 1st May as its national holiday.

    Indonesia to relocate its capital from - Jakarta

    Indonesia declared its plans to shift its capital away from Jakarta. President Joko Widodo’s government plans to create a new Capital out of the crowded Java Island to make sure more reasonable development of the nation amid environmental concernsand overcrowding issues.
    The declaration regarding the same was done by Planning Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro following the Indonesia’s National Development Planning Agency offered its initial study on the capital relocation plan during a Cabinet meeting led by President Widodo.
    Three alternatives presented by Bappenas
    The National Development Planning Agency/Bappenas offered 3 alternatives for relocation of the
    Indonesian Capital.
    The 1st alternative was to keep Jakarta as the capital but create a new government district around the
    Presidential Palaceand the National Monument to advance efficiency.
    The 2nd alternative was to create a new capital situated 50-70 kms outside of Jakarta.
    The 3rd alternative was to confer the capital status upon a city outside the Java island, preferably situated in the centre of Indonesia to fasten development throughout eastern Indonesia.
    Planning Minister Bambang noted that the 1st 2 options would not address the issue of overpopulation in Jakarta.
    Considering that the capital relocation shall serve the vision of long-term progress agenda of Indonesia, the Government decided to resort to the 3rd alternative.

    Nepal collected 3000 kg waste from - Everest

    Nepal has gathered around 3000 kgs of solid waste from Mt. Everest since when Nepal released an ambitious Everest Cleaning Campaign. This 45 days Everest Cleaning Campaign was released on April 14th, on Nepali New Year,and pursues to clean up ‘world’s highest garbage dump.’ According to the Nepal government, 2000 kgs of garbage had been delivered to Okhaldhunga while the residual 1000 kgs were brought to Kathmandu using Nepali Army helicopters for removal.
    Items left behind by climbersand Sherpas comprise discarded fluorescent lights, climbingand camping
    equipment, empty gas containers, food packaging, beer bottlesand a huge amount of human excrement.
    Important Highlights

    • Every year, hundreds of climbers, Sherpasand high-altitude porters make their way to Everest, leaving tonnes of both biodegradableand non-biodegradable waste behind.
    • The campaign will finish on May 29th, the day marked every year to honour the 1st summit of Everest by Edmund Hillaryand Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
    • The collected waste will then be ‘showcased’ in Namche town, before being shipped down to Kathmandu, where it will once again be showcased on World Environment Day on June 5th.
    • Under this campaign Nepal is trying to gather about 5000 kgs of garbage from Base Camp area, while 2000 kgs of garbage will be gathered from the South Col regionand about 3000 kgs will be gathered from Camp-II & Camp-III area.

    Geological Survey of India installed Geological Display Boards at Mawmluh cave, Therriaghat in - Meghalaya

    The Geological Survey of India North Eastern Region installed 2 geological display boards at 2 significant geological sites in Meghalaya.
    Highlights
     

    • The boards are unveiled at Meghalaya’s 2 significant geological sites namely Mawmluh caveand
      Therriaghat, Sobhar in East Khasi Hill District.
    • These geological display boards with geo-scientific data will benefit in creating awareness among visiting tourists, studentsand general public.
    • They will support preserve siteand also assist future generation will be aware of such geological
      developments.
      Mawmluh Cave
      Their importance was highlighted freshly when high resolution stable isotopic studies of stalagmites from cave displayed that there was a major climatic programme around 4200 years ago.
      The stalagmite in Mawmluh cave has been tagged as ‘Global Stratotype Sectionand Point’. It makes it 1st officially ratified marker of a geological time period in India.
      The Meghalayan Age period started arund 4200 years ago skilled an abrupt mega-droughtand cooling worldwide.
      Therriaghat
      It marks Cretaceous-Palaeogene mass extinction programme.
      The Um-Sohryngkew river section at Therriaghat is known for having the most complete records of
      Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary transition in India.
