    Who has been appointed as Transport Commissioner of Delhi - Sandeep Kumar

    Among Important National Current Affairs, on 8th August 2016 Sandeep Kumar has been appointed as the Transport Commissioner of Delhi. 

    He took place of Sanjay Kumar, who was appointed as the commissioner a few months ago only.

    Sandeep Kumar will be seen handling the responsibility as an additional charge.

    • Sandeep Kumar is also the Managing Director of Delhi Khadi and Village Industries Board.

    • He is a 1997-batch Indian Administrative Service officer.

    Former RBI Deputy Governor Anand Sinha appointed to the - IDFC Bank Board

    On 6th August 2016, former RBI Deputy Governor Anand Sinha was appointed to the Board of IDFC Bank. Anand Sinha will join this Bank as an Additional Director in the category of Independent Director on the board with effect from 1 August 2016.

    As Vinod Rai has resigned, after serving on the board for a year, Anand Sinha’s appointment came. Vinod Rai is a former Comptroller and Auditor General of India who served as a Nominee Director representing IDFC Limited on the board of IDFC Bank.

    Please Note: However, Vinod Rai will still continue to be non-executive independent chairman of IDFC Limited.

    August 9: International Day of the - World’s Indigenous People

    Among Important International Current Affairs, on 9th August The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed every year with an aim to promote and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population. 

    Reason’s of this day: 

    • This day recognizes the contributions and achievements of the indigenous people to improve world issues such as environmental protection. 

    • This year 2016 main theme is “Indigenous Peoples’ Right to Education”. The theme is totally devoted to the right to education of indigenous people as a critical education gap exists between indigenous peoples and the general population.

    Mental Health Care Bill, 2013 passed by - Rajya Sabha 

    Among Important National Current Affairs, on 8th August 2016 Rajya Sabha finally passed the Mental Health Care Bill, 2013. This bill repeals the Mental Health Act, 1987. 

    However, the upper house passed the bill with record 134 amendments.

    The Bill also provides for mental health care and services for persons with mental illness too. It also has a provision to protect, promote and fulfill the rights of such persons during delivery of mental healthcare and services.

    Name the swimmer who sets world record to win gold in 400m freestyle - Katie Ledecky

    Among Important Sports Current Affairs, on 7thy August 2016 American swimmer Katie Ledecky set a new world record to fetch gold in the women's 400 metres freestyle at the Rio Olympics.

    Here Katie Ledecky clocked 3 minutes 56.46 seconds only to beat Britain's Jazmin Carlin who clocked 4 minutes 01.23 seconds at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium, Rio de Janeiro. Whereas, America's Leah Smith clocked 4 minutes 01.92 seconds to grab the bronze.

    Which institute of India to house India’s first tiger repository - Wildlife Institute

    Among Important National Current Affairs, in the first week of August only the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) declared that it will house India’s first repository on tigers, under its new Tiger Cell.

    On 6th August 2016, The Tiger Cell was inaugurated. This cell will be funded by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), a statutory body under the Environment Ministry.

    However, the Dehradun-based WII has about 23000 images of tigers, which will be maintained by the Tiger Cell only.
